BACKGROUND:  The Environmental Measurements Facility (EMF) provides quantitative analyses and technical expertise to members of the Stanford community needing to conduct soil, gas, and water measurements.

USER & TECHNICIAN OPERATED INSTRUMENTATION:  The center houses both user and technician operated instruments.  All instruments in the center are user operated instruments with the exception of the ICP-OES and ICP-MS.  In the case of a user operated instrument, the user must obtain training on the instrument from the center's staff before being allowed to sign up for the instrument and use it independently.  All user run instruments, other than the GC, are available to be run by a technician on a case by case basis at a minimum charge of two times the user rate.  If you are interested in having your samples run by the EMF technical staff, you must contact a technician and receive an affirmative response before signing up for instrument time.

No training is required to run samples on a technician operated instrument.  Simply prepare samples according to the protocols on the instrument page and sign up for an available time on the scheduler.

MANDATORY SAFETY TRAINING FOR USERS OF EMF:  All prospective users of the EMF Analytical Center must complete the following general and lab safety training before being given access to the laboratory.  No safety training is required to have samples run on a technician operated instrument (ICP).

Tier I Safety Training (General Safety and Emergency Preparedness)

This requirement can be completed by taking the EH&S online course "General Safety & Emergency Preparedness (EHS-4200) at http://safetytrain.stanford.edu (please send the completion notice directly to the EMF technicians) or providing evidence of participation in one of the annual School sponsored Tier I trainings offered in the fall of each year.

Tier II Laboratory Safety Training (Chemical Safety)

This requirement can be completed by taking the EH&S online course "Chemical Safety for Laboratories (EHS-1900) at http://safetytrain.stanford.edu (please send the completion notice directly to the EMF technicians)or providing evidence of participation in one of the annual School sponsored Tier II trainings offered in the fall of each year.

Tier III EMF Specific Training (Safety Plan and Analytical Instrumentation)

In addition to Tier I & II Training, all users of the EMF Analytical Center are expected to familiar with the EMF Safety Plan.  All prospective users of an analytical instrument must obtain training on the instrument from the center's staff before being allowed to sign up for the instrument and use it independently.  Most trainings are offered once a quarter.  Training dates can be found in the table below or on the individual schedulers for each instrument.  You need to sign up for the training online before participating in the event.  First time users of any instrument in the center will need to email the primary contact person before signing up on the online scheduler.
